Locations in Germany
BioNTech was founded in 2008, where BioNTech’s headquarters are still located today. Mainz is also home to several R&D and GMP-certified manufacturing facilities for the company’s clinical candidates as well as a new commercial-scale manufacturing site that will be operational in 2024.
From our headquarters in Mainz, we have expanded with sites and subsidiaries in Idar-Oberstein, Berlin, Halle, Martinsried and Neuried (near Munich) and Marburg.

The Marburg site has been part of the BioNTech SE network since 2020 and produces the COVID-19 vaccine in one of the largest mRNA production facilities in Europe.
With the BioNTainers, our solution approach for a modular mRNA production facility to support scalable vaccine production, we are developing another innovative production concept at the Marburg site.
BioNTech Innovative Manufacturing Services (IMFS) GmbH is based in Idar-Oberstein near Mainz, where retroviral vectors, cell therapies and mRNA products are manufactured. Idar-Oberstein is known throughout Germany as a gemstone town with goldsmiths and museums. The town is located near the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park, which is rich in well-developed hiking and cycling trails. One of the most popular sights in Idar-Oberstein is the Felsenkirche church, which towers over the town from a prominent position.
In the surrounding castles and palaces as well as in the Celtic settlement of Altburg, you can follow the traces of our ancestors. Idar-Oberstein also offers a range of high-quality cultural events throughout the year, such as the Jazz Days, the Theatre Summer and the "Film in the Theatre" initiative.
Berlin is one of the largest science regions in Europe with the highest concentration of researchers and academics per capita in Germany. It is home to over 70 non-university research institutions, two elite universities and over 250 biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
Berlin is also known as "the startup city" due to its close-knit network of science, industry and a strong presence of incubators. The city's global business environment is reflected in its cosmopolitan and open-minded atmosphere. BioNTech's peptide manufacturing facility, JPT Peptide Technologies GmbH, based in Berlin, focuses on the development of novel individualized therapeutic approaches and epitope-based clinical diagnostics.
BioNTech Delivery Technologies GmbH at the Halle site has been part of BioNTech since January 2020. Since then, the technical development of CorVac and the durable form of COMIRNATY (Tris/Sucrose) have been supported on two floors and 560 m2 in the Weinberg Campus Innovation Hub.
BioNTech Small Molecules GmbH is based in Martinsried near Munich. It offers fully integrated research services covering all aspects of small molecule development. The Munich area is Germany's leading biotechnology location with around 250 life science companies, two elite universities, renowned scientific institutes and two innovation and start-up centers specializing in biotechnology.
Munich is the capital of Bavaria and a global center for art, science, technology, business and education. The English Garden in the city center and the easily accessible Alps offer countless outdoor activities, from hiking to surfing on the Isar. Munich is also home to the Oktoberfest, where visitors from all over the world and locals gather to enjoy a measure of the famous local beers alongside hearty Bavarian dishes - a typical example of the Bavarian motto of "Gemütlichkeit".

BioNTech US is a subsidiary of BioNTech SE with a strong base in Europe. As a major center for research and clinical development, our sites in Gaithersburg and Cambridge are focused on the development of novel neoantigen-based T-cell therapies, ideally complementing BioNTech's highly innovative scientific approach and broad pipeline.
Gaithersburg, Maryland (MD) is home to our newly established clinical manufacturing facility for BioNTech US. The site supports the research development of BioNTech's growing novel cell therapy business, including product candidates for cancer based on CAR-T Cell amplifying mRNA Vaccine (CARVac) and NEOSTIM.
Together with BioNTech US' North American headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts, both sites are an important part of our global mission to revolutionize the development of new immunotherapies for cancer and infectious diseases.

In Kigali, we are building our first mRNA production facility in Africa with the help of our modular BioNTainers.
Kigali is the capital of Rwanda - known as the "land of a thousand hills". The city is the country's vibrant economic center and offers numerous recreational opportunities. Working on Nyarugenge Hill, Kigali's business district, golfing on Lovers Lake or culture and art in the Cultural Village - Kigali offers it all in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Rwanda invested early in digitalization and is one of the tech hubs on the African continent. Many attractions are within easy reach, including national parks, picturesque lakes and volcanoes. Rwanda hosts the Tour Du Rwanda, the Iron Man and numerous cultural events such as the Kwita Izina, the annual gorilla baby naming ceremony, the Rwanda Film Festival "Hillywood" and the KigaliUP music festival.
The country offers a multicultural flair with four official languages: Kinyarwanda, English, French and Swahili.
BioNTech plans to develop a state-of-the-art mRNA manufacturing facility at the Bundoora campus of La Trobe University in the Melbourne region, with groundbreaking planned in 2024. The facility will be based on the Company’s high-tech, digitally enabled modular manufacturing units called BioNTainers. The site is intended to support R&D and clinical-scale manufacturing of investigational mRNA-based medicines from the local ecosystem as well as from other third parties globally.
In addition, BioNTech will set up an mRNA Innovation Center in Melbourne where the Company will leverage its mRNA expertise to support the development of the mRNA ecosystem in the State of Victoria.

The city has positioned itself not only as the center of Australia’s booming health-tech sector but also as an attractive start-up ecosystem, according to the 2023 Startup Genome Life Sciences Report. The city has an extensive research and educational infrastructure and is a place for all things trendy and tasty, offering numerous leisure activities.
Through the acquisition of the technology company InstaDeep in July 2023, BioNTech gained around 290 colleagues who support the achievement of the goal to build world-leading capabilities in AI-driven drug discovery and drive the development of innovative immunotherapies and vaccines.
In addition, there is another office in London focusing on Global Medical Affairs.
BioNTech R&D (Austria GmbH) is based in Vienna, Austria. It expands our portfolio in the field of infectious diseases. A team of around 20 people researches precise active substances for the treatment of bacterial infections.
Located in close proximity to the Austrian Alps, the city of Vienna boasts impressive imperial architecture such as Schönbrunn Palace, the Opera Ball and the famous Sacher Torte. To explore the culture, you can stroll through Vienna's many museums with famous collections of world-renowned works of art, go to the opera or relax in one of Vienna's many coffee houses.
